Hello, my name is Symone Gordon, a First Year Fashion Design student here at Stevenson
University. As it boils down to the end of Spring Semester 2024, I have come to reflect on my
experiences so far as a fashion design student. Coming into this fashion design program, I was
excited to learn and dive deeper into my knowledge of sewing. As a determined designer who
has been sewing since nine years old, I knew ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ could bring opportunity and
growth to this desired craft. As the program builds off of the introductory classes such as FDES
101 and Garment Construction, these classes bring a great basic understanding of sewing and
techniques for all. In these classes, all students are required to sew a women’s shift dress,
child’s dress, men’s pants, and women’s skirt. From cutting out the pattern pieces to then
sewing the pieces together out of a favorite fabric choice, was a fun creative journey. I am so
excited to be immersed into the complex courses of the major and see what other challenges lie
ahead. The fashion design professors here at ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ are amazing instructors
who ensure that their students are meeting industry level standards. Professor Aronhime,
Professor Min, and Professor Simpson have all helped me become successful in my design
classes. Not only are they my professors but also a support team. Another experience that has
greatly impacted my time here at ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ is being a fashion design assistant for
the program. I am able to assist others and provide materials for students when needed. I also
get to assist the professors with any tasks that need to be done. I would say that becoming a
fashion design assistant has allowed me to meet all of the wonderful designers we have in the
program. Everyone is so hardworking, and they bring great positivity throughout the program
and to one another. The environment is very friendly as well. You really do receive that
welcoming feeling when entering the fashion design hall. For the new designers coming into
¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ, they will not regret this wonderful experience. Here’s to my first year as a
fashion design student at ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ! ‘Till next time future designers!
